About the course

This is an in-depth course which covers grief theory, traumatic loss, complicated grief, the physical signs of grief and much more! We will look at other types of loss, in addition to bereavement. We will look at a variety of interventions that can be used and you will learn practical skills to help you feel more confident sitting with grief. The course balances theory with real-world practice. The themes explored reflect the situations counsellors often find most daunting, and the questions that don’t always have straightforward answers. The course is delivered through 23 short lessons and takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete. You can work through it at your own pace, and it includes reflective exercises alongside downloadable PDFs and slides to support your learning.

About the author

Hello and welcome! I’m Tracy Dixon, a BACP-accredited counsellor, and grief has been part of my working life for many years. Before training as a counsellor, I worked within a local hospice, supporting the palliative care team. Being close to end-of-life care gave me an early understanding of how grief often begins long before a death, and how deeply it affects families, carers, and professionals. I later managed a bereavement counselling service that specialised in traumatic loss and complex grief. The people seeking support were often dealing with sudden or shocking deaths — including suicide, murder, and tragic accidents — or were struggling because their grief didn’t fit what they or others expected. Many were living with additional layers of complexity, such as fractured family relationships, unresolved trauma, or circumstances that made their grief difficult to express openly or safely. That experience shaped how I understand grief in practice — as work that often asks us to tolerate uncertainty and resist the urge to fix. It continues to inform my work in private practice today, supporting clients with bereavement and trauma. This course draws together my experiences and is designed to help counsellors feel more confident and grounded when working with grief.

The course is practical, interesting and informative and is proving to be a very important refresh for my stale bereavement skills. I think the course is really well suited for those early on in their counselling careers who maybe unsure and a little intimidated by the topic of bereavement but also for practitioners like myself who needed the refresh and reset with their already established work.
